As the 2017/18 school year came to a close, it was great to see many of our Chavistas move forward in their lives at class graduations and to see some of our Chavistas get accepted to colleges.
Joel Castro, the 8th grade President of the Cesar Chavez Service Club at Wilson Middle School, graduated valedictorian of his 2018 class. Joel has been a Chavista since the fourth grade and credits much of his academic progress to what he has learned in the Chavez Clubs.
Last year Joel went on the annual Chavez Clubs Washington D.C. trip where he had great experiences exploring Washington landmarks and meeting with our elected representatives like Congressman Juan Vargas. Joel has been very active in other school organizations including the Wilson Middle School Robotics Club, the College Avenue Compact and The League of Amazing Programmers. Joel will be attending Hoover High School next year and we are very excited to continue to see his growth. Here is a photo of Joel giving his valedictorian speech.
We are also very proud of all of our Chavistas who go on to college. This fall, four San Diego High School Chavistas will start their studies at the University of California Berkeley This photo was taken during a lunch at Carlos and Linda LeGerrette's home, where the Chavistas had an opportunity to meet and chat with Mr. Jack Lay, who is a Cal Berkeley alum.
