Chavista Book Clubs

Reading for purpose.

By: Kait Cordua, Club Manager

These students from Longfellow K-8 Spanish Immersion Magnet School are fifth graders in the Longfellow Chavista Book Club. Book Clubs occur once a week during their English Language Arts rotation. Currently, the Chavistas are reading the The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child, an autobiographical novel by Francisco Jiménez, New York Public Library 1999 Book for the Teen-Age and winner of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Fiction, among others. Their response has been incredible, and with the help of retired teacher and volunteer, Pam Clark, Chavistas are analyzing “Panchito’s” journey and coming to understand why Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to La Causa.
